More leaders of Akwa Ibom State have continued to express strong disappointment with the removal of the MD of NDDC, Mr Bassey Dan Abia, the latest being the Akwa Ibom State commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs, Right Honourable Victor Antai.
Speaking in a visit to him by the forum of past Local Government vice chairmen, on Tuesday, Honourable Antai communicated the mind of Akwa Ibom people, especially people from Eket senatorial district. “ Eket senatorial district is the biggest senatorial district in Nigeria, with 12 local governments. We produce the wealth of Nigeria, which is why Akwa Ibom is the highest producer of crude oil in this nation. Is there any good road in Eket senatorial district?”, he asked.
Going further, he marvelled that few Akwa Ibom people would even consider supporting APC, a party, he stressed, that has added nothing to Akwa Ibom State, but is rather “taking what belongs to us somewhere else”
“In the name of ‘change’, they removed an Akwa Ibom son halfway into his tenure. And instead of replacing him with another Akwa Ibom son or daughter, they put someone from Rivers state, a place that have had finished their tenure as Chairman, MD, director for projects and finance.
A rector at the maritime academy passed on, and they appointed people who are not even from Akwa Ibom State to administer that institution. Is this the ‘Change’ we are talking about? They are robbing us of our rrights in the name of Change. Let's stop playing politics with the destiny of a people.” The commissioner sounded.
Going ahead to reinforce popular narrative in Akwa Ibom that the APC, as a party, do not respect equity whether in Akwa Ibom or in Nigeria, the commissioner, who is also from the Eket senatorial district, echoed the mind of Akwa Ibom people to sustain support for PDP even as he queried:
“If the APC loved the people of Eket senatorial district, if they loved the very fabric of Akwa Ibom unity, why didn't they bring a governorship candidate from the area? Uyo senatorial district and Ikot Ekpene senatorial district had their tenures and we supported them. Now that it is the turn of Eket senatorial district, why would the APC want to take that from us?
We love our brothers, the people from Uyo and Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts; and they have rightly dissociated themselves from this APC aspiration. It is nothing but the ambition of one man.”
In concluding, the commissioner sounded strongly;
“Let it be known that we in Akwa Ibom State, and in Eket senatorial district, are not happy. We are not interested in the APC. It is obvious that they want us to fight ourselves, but we will fight our common enemy, which is the APC.”
The forum of past local government secretaries responded by recounting the many benefits that Akwa Ibom stands to gain from the Udom Emmanuel led administration, and pledged their continued support notwithstanding the Appeal court ruling that seems to be against Akwa Ibom people. And they unanimously declared their vote of confidence for Governor Udom Emmanuel.
